Tanya Milton Launches Re-Election Campaign for Chatham County Commission - District 5



SAVANNAH, Ga. – Current Chatham County Commissioner District 5 Tanya Milton has officially kicked off her campaign to seek re-election to serve a second term.

Milton made her re-election announcement alongside many friends, family and local residents on Sunday, January 14, 2024 at Alpine Park. 


“It has been an honor and privilege to serve the residents of Chatham County in many different capacities, but I am most proud of the successful progress I have been a part of since my election as your District 5 County Commission,” said Milton. “Although there have been some challenging times, with still more to come, I would welcome the opportunity to help Chatham County continue to grow and prosper in a second term as your faithful community servant.” 


During Milton’s first term as Commissioner, she has been the voice of progress, 

At the top of that list is the support from the entire Commission to join the Joint Development Authority which includes the development authorities of Bryan, Bulloch, Chatham and Effingham counties. The Joint Development Authority worked to put together the Megasite for the new Hyundai facility bringing 8000 jobs to our community. 


• Road improvements to Garrard Ave. The Streetlight has been installed and Shoulder work is complete. 


• Quacco Road Improvements Widening to a four lane section adding turn lanes on Quacco Rd from Hwy 17. The Construction of the intersection improvements at Hwy 17 and Quacco Rd. are complete. 


• Road resurfacing in several neighborhoods 


• Little Neck Road Reconstruction and improvements include widening the road from Hwy 17 to Al Henderson is complete. 


• Flooding in the Westlake area: We are working to resolve the water problem with the Westlake Drainage Diversion. While they are completing the work on warehouses on Veterans Parkway, we have an agreement with the developers to create a New channel and conduits to divert runoff from overloaded systems to eliminate chronic flooding of residential complexes. Preliminary design is underway. The project is being coordinated in Phases with multiple stakeholders. The Initial phase will be underway and construction will begin later this year.


• The work on Louis Mills Branch, Phase III includes Access and conveyance improvements to the existing canal. The project has been bidded and construction is scheduled to begin February 2024. 


•Also Red Gate Farms Storm Drainage improvements are underway. We have Installed a new pipe system to re-route the drainage around a problematic private pond to an existing County canal. Construction began in the summer of 2023 and is estimated to be complete by February 2024. 


• New Trial Court building next to the Chatham County Courthouse should be complete by spring 2024. 


• I am Working to institute a Seniors Home Repair Program. 


Many other projects have been proposed and I would like to see them through completion. 


Milton, a native of Savannah, is the Vice President and Advertising Director of The Savannah Tribune. She was a member of the Metropolitan Planning Commission from 2010-2019, serving as Chairman of the Board from 2016-2018. Milton volunteers with The United Way of the Coastal Empire, is a board member of Home Builders of Greater Savannah and served as past Vice President of the Savannah Jazz Association. She has membership with Top Ladies of Distinction Savannah Chapter as well as the National Council of Negro Women. A long-time member of Tremont Temple Missionary Baptist Church serving on the Home Mission Ministry as well as Sunday School, Milton is married to Walter Thomas and has two grown daughters and two grandchildren.
